Resilient Sound Isolation Clips (commonly known as RSIC or acoustic isolation clips) are specialized mechanical fasteners used in architectural acoustics. They are installed between the structural framing (wood or steel studs) and the drywall of walls and ceilings to decouple the structures and block sound transmission.
Core Principle: Acoustic Decoupling
In standard wall construction, sound waves (especially impact and low-frequency noise) travel directly through drywall into the studs and out the other side. This is known as an "acoustic bridge."
Resilient clips feature an integrated, highly elastic rubber or elastomer isolator. By mechanically separating the framing from the drywall, the clips break the acoustic bridge. When sound vibrations hit the wall, the rubber core absorbs the energy and converts it into trace heat, significantly increasing the Sound Transmission Class (STC) and Impact Insulation Class (IIC) ratings.

  • Mechanical Rooms: Used to isolate vibrations caused by HVAC systems, water pumps, and industrial piping.
Typical Installation Layering (From Inside to Out)
  1. Base Structure: The original concrete slab, wood studs, or light-gauge steel framing.
  2. Sound Isolation Clips: Screwed directly into the structural framing at designated intervals.
  3. Hat Channels (Furring Channels): Metal tracks snapped directly into the metal claws of the isolation clips, leaving them "floating" off the main frame.
  4. Acoustic Insulation: Fiberglass or rockwool batts placed in the cavity between the studs.
  5. Drywall Facade: One or two layers of drywall (often sandwiched with green glue dampening compound) screwed exclusively into the floating hat channels.
